Dalit woman beaten up by police officer in UP - In Pictures

An Uttar Pradesh cop was on Thursday (February 18) was suspended after TIMES NOW revealed shocking pictures of an inspector thrashing a woman. A policeman in Amethi has been caught on camera thrashing a woman suspect inside the police station.

In the footage, the officer is seen slapping the woman, ripping her clothes apart, pushes her to the ground and continues to punch and kick the woman.

No action is expected to be taken against the female constable standing as a mute spectator. Officials say that she was too afraid to stop her superior from assaulting the woman.

The victim in question -- Sangeeta Kori, is suspected of being involved in her husband's murder.

According to the Code of criminal procedure, Section 46 states that no woman shall be arrested after sunset and before sunrise, that is between 6 pm and 6 am and that she has the right to refuse to go to the Police Station, even if an arrest warrant has been issued against her.

Moreover, a woman suspect involved, can be handled only by a police woman and male cops cannot touch her. During interrogation, a policewoman has to be present.

All arrests of women shall only be carried out by a police officer not below the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Police, or by a head constable in the presence of responsible male relatives of such woman.

This is not the first time that cops have crossed the line. Uttar Pradesh has been a witness to several cases of utter lawlessness this month alone.

Two custodial deaths were reported in Allahabad two days ago. The men were beaten with lathis and rifle butts in the police lockup. In a bid to cover up, the cops took the men to hospital claiming they were unwell.
